[ Normally Joshua would poll the audience on his anniversary, but this year, he gets a bit distracted. You see, a collection of spray paints has shown up in the store, so Joshua is taking the opportunity to make off with all of them.

Or, trying to. His bag sort of breaks, so at some point between the store and 39 you might find a spray paint can rolling towards you with a Joshua chasing after it. ]

[ Alternatively later in the day you can find him adding another mural to the back of his house to accompany the ones to either side. As it slowly takes shape it reveals itself as a cityscape, viewed from a very high angle.

Four years. What he wouldn't give to be home right now... ]

I doubt it. But that's the nature of what I do. It doesn't make me many friends.

[ But then he's focusing back on Kari again. ]

It seems rather talkative. I take it it doesn't get out much?

You were seriously talking with it? I can't even tell...

[Which was even more unsettling than she initially thought. Was it always there listening to everything going on around her then?]

[She sighs, then shakes her head.]

That thing is a spirit. I don't know much about it except that it lives inside the pendent I use to transform. The name Hoshikyo just came to me the first time I figured out how to do it, but I think it originally came from the spirit's name. The last time it was "out" it called itself Hoshiko.

If it's any consolation, it doesn't seem to be able to explain what it is, either.

So it's tied to Hoshikyo's existence?

Yeah, something like that. I only found out about it after it possessed me once back home. But it only lasted a few minutes, so it didn't really occur to me that it could actually, you know, think.

[That and she was a little distracted with the whole identity-being-revealed to her two friends and all after she suddenly tried to kill one of them.]

But the last time wasn't even two weeks ago. And it lasted a few days. I still can't really remember what it did while it was awake though... maybe that's why its so chatty now...

It suppressed you completely?

Yeah. It only let go because my magic ran out. If the barrier didn't limit it, I probably would have stayed that way even longer.

If it wants to get out a bit more, of course it might be chatty. Wouldn't you get a little bit bored like that?

Except the first time it got out, it tried to kill someone. That's hardly something I can sympathize with.

...and the person it tried to kill was the girl I was out on a date with at the time. Kind of a mood killer, don't you think?

If it had succeeded, you wouldn't have had to worry about that, you know.

"If it succeeded" isn't really something I like thinking about.

But it's dangerous and unpredictable. I can't just let something like that wander around Luceti as it pleases, you know?

Well, you certainly can. The actual problem is you'd feel responsible for any issues it causes.

I've seen enough to know sociopaths come in all types. At the least, you're already a pathological liar by virtue of having a secret identity.

Hey, it's only lying if I actively deny it! Lies of omission aren't that bad.

You've never had to actively deny it?

Of course not! Usually I don't have to worry about my life turning into a bad fanfic that puts my identity in jeopardy. The list of people who've found out here and back home is pretty small.

But look, for once, it's nothing personal. Bad things happen to people who know my identity, so the fewer people I have to watch out for, the better.

Besides, it's hardly a demanding job. I've gotten lucky so far.
