Let it never be said that the Malnosso are inhospitable. Of all the places to be left out in the rain, they deposited me on my very own roof. [ Dramatic sigh. ] The least they could have done was given me a ladder to get down.

Well then, who wants to let me know what I've missed?

Indeed. So, anything exciting I missed?

I don't know about "exciting," but there wasn't an experiment. There were some refugees from another enclosure staying here. It was really... busy.

... Another enclosure?

Yeah. I guess they were attacked, so they had to stay here until they could be taken somewhere else.

What were they like?

They weren't very different from us. Just... unsatisfied. [Well. That was putting it lightly, but...] Things were really different in their enclosure, from the sounds of it. They didn't have the same technology we do.

... Like electricity? [ Joshua remembers those days. ]

I think so, yeah. They weren't really too happy about it.

I wouldn't imagine so. Luceti didn't always have electricity, either. If we knew back then that somewhere else had it and we didn't... well, jealousy can be quite an ugly emotion.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It made them a little hostile. [He couldn't imagine being that way himself, but... well, people could be weird.] Some people here said they recognized a few of the ones from the other enclosure, though.

The thought cuts into his mind and he quickly pushes it away just as fast. Pondering the what if is useless, and he can't even hear Music right now. Even if he had been here, it wouldn't have helped. ]

Hostile, hmm? Any fights?

I don't know, maybe. I didn't see any, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were.

I see.

Considering there doesn't seem to be a particularly large number of worlds people come from, I suppose it's not surprising that people would recognize others, either.

I guess not. Either there aren't a lot of worlds out there or only people from certain ones are able to come here. It's pretty weird to think about it, though.

If I had to guess, it would be the latter. Somehow I don't see the number of different worlds out there being finite. I think some of them are just more likely to connect to here than others. That would be why some of us have more acquaintances from home, and others are the only ones.

Yeah, I think that makes sense... I wonder what makes our worlds so special compared to other ones.

That, I have no idea. I've talked to quite a few people here, and everything you could think of has been different in some world.

I'm not really surprised. But it can't be that the others are too normal, that doesn't make sense.

Whatever it is, it's probably something we can't see.

Probably. If we could, I'm not sure anyone would still be here.

[Because who knows? Maybe that's the secret to all of this.]

Maybe, maybe not. But thinking that certainly seems like it would lead to plenty of disappointment if it's proven wrong.

You think so? I'm not sure I really care either way.

I do. I'm curious, and I'd hate to think learning would also be our solution. It seems much safer to be pleasantly surprised in the rare chance it's true.

Why? Because it's better than being disappointed?
